On September 12th, 1991, Simply Red’s fourth studio album, Stars, peaked at No. 1 in the United Kingdom for the first of five times. The record included hit singles: Stars, For Your Babies and Something Got Me Started. The album was the best-selling album in the United Kingdom in 1991 and 1992, spending 134 weeks on the charts. As of July 2016, it is the 14th best-selling album of all time in the UK.
The album was on the shortlist of nominees for the 1992 Mercury Prize. Stars was ranked number 80 on Q’s list of “The 100 Greatest British Albums Ever”, in 2000. Colin Larkin’s All Time Top 1000 Albums ranked it 258th in 2000.
The single, Stars:
The song “Stars”, was released in November 1991, as the second single from the album. Written by lead singer Mick Hucknall and produced by Stewart Levine, it became the first single from the album to enter the UK top 10, reaching number eight in December 1991. Outside of the United Kingdom, “Stars” charted in Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, and Zimbabwe. In the United States, it peaked at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Q Magazine included “Stars” in their list of the “1001 Best Songs Ever” in 2003.
