Crash Harmony, a New York City indie rock band, released a mini-documentary album trailer for their debut album ‘Nobody Asked For This’ (30 + years since forming at Yale University), via Magic Door Records. Frontman Dave Derby (The Dambuilders, Gramercy Arms, Lloyd Cole) is accompanied by Mike Potenza (The Anderson Council), Jon Nighswander, and Nils Nadeau. The album trailer was filmed at Magic Door Recording in Montclair, NJ – the very studio where they recorded this long-awaited release.
Crash Harmony consists of Dave Derby (vocals, guitars), Mike Potenza (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Jon Nighswander (bass, vocals), and Nils Nadeau (drums, percussion, vocals). The band was formed in 1986, in New Haven, Connecticut, while attending Yale University, and their last performance was in May 1988. They hadn’t played together again until 2022, when they rekindled the spirit of their college days and resolved to finally release their previous material.
Dave went on to The Dambuilders (later Gramercy Arms), Mike joined The Anderson Council, Jon left for Europe, and Nils wandered north. Crash Harmony, however, remained relevant no matter where they travelled. Eventually, they had to return. They had to come back to that spot, so decades later, Crash Harmony reunited to record a new record of old songs – a rock-and-roll reconstruction of the New Haven atmosphere that permanently changed them.
Exemplifying the 10 tracks on this record are the singles ‘Velour Goddess’ and ‘Orange Background’, the latter of which Nils Nadeau describes as “a letter from our college selves to our grown selves and also, in a way, from Generation X to what we have now in the world”.
Now available on vinyl and digitally via Magic Door Record Label, this album was mixed and mastered by renowned producer Ray Ketchem (Guided by Voices, Elk City, Gramercy Arms, Luna). Recorded by Ketchem and Dave Derby in NYC, Ketchem produced it together with Crash Harmony. Video directed & filmed by Dan Karlok at Magic Door Recording.
